Sea Surface Temperature and Color

Sea surface-temperature is one important type of data that GOES and POES provide. Knowing the temperature of ocean water is important in and of itself. Temperature changes influence the behavior of fish, can cause the bleaching of corals, and affects weather along the coast. Satellite images of sea-surface temperature also show patterns of water circulation. Examples include locations of upwelling, characterized by cold waters that rise up from the depths, often near the coasts; and warm water currents, such as the Gulf Stream. The most commonly used instrument providing information on sea surface temperatures is the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA meteorological satellites, NOAA-14, NOAA-15, and NOAA-16. This sensor collects data every day, creating an image by combining rows of 2,048 pixels (picture elements, or “dots”) as it passes over the Earth’s surface. Each individual pixel taken by the AVHRR covers an area of the Earth’s surface approximately 1 square kilometer in size; this provides a regional overview of sea surface temperature and its impacts

The Atlantic Ocean is bounded on the west by North and South America. In the north and northeast, it is separated from the Arctic Ocean by the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Greenland, Iceland, Jan Mayen, Svalbard, and mainland Europe. It connects to the Arctic Ocean through the Denmark Strait, Greenland Sea, Norwegian Sea, and Barents Sea. To the east, the boundaries of the ocean proper are Europe, the Strait of Gibraltar (where it connects with the Mediterranean Sea, one of its marginal seas, and, in turn, the Black Sea), and Africa. In the southeast, the Atlantic merges into the Indian Ocean, the border being defined by the 20° East meridian, running south from Cape Agulhas to Antarctica. While some authorities show the Atlantic Ocean extending south to Antarctica, others show it as bounded at the 60° parallel by the Southern Ocean.^[1] In the southwest, the Drake Passage connects it to the Pacific Ocean. A man-made link between the Atlantic and Pacific is provided by the Panama Canal. Beside those mentioned, other large bodies of water adjacent to the Atlantic are the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay, the Arctic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, and the Celtic Sea.

I want to talk to you all about my class on recording. In this class, we study how to use a mixer and then learn how to create and produce our own music. It is a third period elective meaning that you do not have to be in the music dept to be able to take it. Students who do take it say that they enjoy it greatly.

To the left you can see a picture of Dido and Aneas. (I think that is how you spell it.) Anyway, it has nothing to do with my class but it works.

If you ever get an opportunity to float in microgravity, I highly recommend it. My flight today was incredible to say the least. People compare floating in space to floating in water. It is similar but a feeling that really can not be described until you try it. Not to forget, we were there for work and had a lot of success collecting data for our experiment. We had colored spheres today. We also added a surprise ending to our experiment, but we have to wait for the video for that one. I will continue to add to this blog for some time after this trip because we still have to analyze our data.

So I know everyone is dying to know if I vomited on the vomit comet. You’ll have to ask her yourself.

Can’t wait to go back home and see everyone on Monday!
